Navigation integrated with Head-Up Displays

A head-up display, also known as a HUD, for automobiles is a transparent display that projects images onto a glass combiner mounted above or below the windshield, without requiring drivers to look away from their usual viewpoints. Navigation, speedometer, and tachometer are the most common information presented via a HUD.

In comparison with other navigation systems, the head-up display reduces driver distraction and enhances driving safety since the HUD presents information exactly in line of sight. HUD is an excellent secondary display for automobile navigation, while working together with an in-vehicle infotainment or a smart phone.

Polstar accumulated rich HUD integration experiences from working together with HUD manufacturers. The screen size ranges from 3” above and the wireless transmission covers both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Instead of normal navigation images, simplified information such as turn arrows, distance to next turn, speed camera alarm, and estimated time to arrival are the most welcome information to be displayed on the HUD.

Navigation integrated with Tablets

A tablet computer is a mobile device equipped with a touchscreen interface that is more like a hybrid between a smartphone and notebook PC. Tablet computers are often chosen as a navigation platform because of the built-in GPS receiver, the wide variety of screen sizes, and the mountable capability.

Fifteen years in operation is a time long enough for Polstar to serve manufacturers from many industries including all-terrain vehicles and heavy motorcycles. To meet their outdoor requirements of water proof, dust resistant, and vibration resistant, we tailored and integrated our navigation software with numerous so-called “rugged tablet computers”.

For the rider’s recreational and/or utility uses, all-terrain vehicle manufacturers often demand Polstar to tailor unique navigation functions such as street and off-road turning guidance, save-the-trail, and off-trail notifications. Group sharing, detailed lane marking, and live weather information, on the other hand, are the three most popular functions for heavy motorcycle manufactures.

The following table summarizes all specifications Polstar’s navigation software can be adapted to the tablet computer:
  • Screen Size:  3.5 - 12 inches
  • CPU:  X86, ARM, 32/64 bits
  • Operating System:  Android, iOS, Windows
  • RAM:   > 32 MB
  • Resolution:  320*240, 480*242, 800*480, 1024*768, and more.

Navigation on PNDs

PA personal navigation device is a portable electronic product, equipped with a touch screen, which is dedicated for positioning and navigation applications. A dedicated-for-navigation device is valuable for those who rely heavily on routing and turning guidance, although smart phones now offer a free alternative.

In comparison with smartphones running road navigation applications, PNDs usually own a larger screen, a speaker designed to be head over road noise, and without other programs draining the speed or battery. In addition, a PND often comes with a windshield mount which assures better satellite exposure and easier screen touches.
